What are boutique and lifestyle hotels? 

If you're a little unclear about what boutique and lifestyle lodgings are, you are in good company.  Historically, definitions have been as varied as the actual properties within the boutique hotel industry itself.  So in an effort to provide greater clarity for the current meaning of the terms "boutique hotel" and "lifestyle hotel." the Boutique & Lifestyle Lodging Association conducted a research study, and we are pleased to share the results with you.

We discovered that boutique and lifestyle hotels are defined by the following physical attributes:

• Cultural/Historic/ Authentic
• Individual hotel / not a Chain
• Interesting, unique services
• Many, high-quality in-room features
• Social spaces, such as living rooms and libraries, with social events
• Innovative
• Less about brand; more personal
• Contemporary, modern

However, what's really interesting is that guests do not define boutique hotels by physical attributes alone. As one Delphi panelist who participated in the survey noted, ‘It’s not the size, it’s the experience." Delphi panelists identified a range of emotions and experiences they perceived to define boutique and lifestyle hotels. They said the most differentiating emotional responses to this unique lodging experience were:  “discovery, curiosity and intrigue” and “amazement." Other emotions the panel said they felt during their stays were:  “social," “happy, joyful, amused” and “sensual, sexy, romantic."
